Timeless Stories Films

Synopsis

Set in a rural Balinese classroom, Tarian Tresna (Dance of Love) tells the story of Ge Maha, a quiet but resolute schoolgirl who stuns her classmates and teacher by proclaiming that she is the reincarnation of the goddess Sita. When asked to prove it, Ge Maha performs the Tarian Tresna, a sacred dance once inspired by the sacrifices of Balinese women who resisted Dutch colonization with courage and grace.

The film draws on the Ramayana, one of South Asia’s most enduring epics, and on the true stories of Balinese women during Dutch colonization who chose self-sacrifice over enslavement. Their bravery gave rise to sacred dances still performed today as acts of reverence and resistance. Thematically it moves through faith, feminine resilience, cultural identity and the legacy of ancestral memory.
